Short Self-Help Books on Breathing, Sleep and Stress for Busy People
Most self-help books on stress, sleep or breathing are 250 pages long and assume you have a free month. If you are busy, you need something you can read in an evening and use the next morning in two minutes. That is why I wrote my books short, one problem each.
The short answer: for a daily breathing practice that takes minutes, Bare Breath. For nights, Bare Sleep. For a mind that won’t settle, Bare Mind. For attention, Bare Focus. If you want three in one, BARE: The Collection. And if my plain, no-technique style is not for you, two good short alternatives are below.
Bare Breath by Jack Bare is a short breathing book for beginners (26 pages on Kindle, under an hour to read) that helps you stop forcing and overthinking the breath and let natural breathing come back, with six practices, from two to twenty minutes each, a seven-day starter plan, and practices for stressful moments and winding down for sleep.
Is there a short self-help book series on breathing, sleep and stress?
Yes. The Bare Series by Jack Bare is four short practice books, one problem each: Bare Breath for the breath and stressful moments (26 pages on Kindle), Bare Sleep for the night (40 pages on Kindle), Bare Mind for thoughts that keep replaying (64 pages on Kindle) and Bare Focus for attention. BARE: The Collection puts Breath, Sleep and Mind in one volume.
| Book | For | Length | Practices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare Breath | The breath, stressful moments | 26 pages (Kindle) | Six practices, two to twenty minutes each; seven-day starter |
| Bare Sleep | The night, trying too hard to sleep | 40 pages (Kindle) | Five night practices; seven-night starter |

Lengths are from the Goodreads listing of each edition named, checked October 23, 2026. Each book stands alone; read them in any order.

I wrote the four Bare books and the collection. Reading times are estimates from word counts. Other books are described from their publishers’ pages as of October 2026, and I have no tie to their authors.
Why one short book per problem
Stress, sleep and a busy head are linked, but you rarely need help with all three at once. A short book on the one that bothers you most is easier to finish and easier to use. The Bare books share one idea, that a lot of the trouble is bracing we don’t notice, so they build on each other if you read more than one.
If you want to start without any book, good basics are free. Harvard Health’s piece on breath control is a clear start for the day, and the Sleep Foundation’s guide to a bedtime routine covers the evening.
A daily practice for busy people
One thing, once a day: before you open your laptop or your phone in the morning, let one full breath out finish on its own, then start. That is all. It takes ten seconds and gives the day a starting line. The full sequence is in the book.
This is a reading guide, not medical advice. None of these books replaces care from a doctor or therapist. If a breathing practice makes you dizzy or lightheaded, stop and breathe normally.
