The Best Short Book on Attention for a Distracted Mind
What is the best short book on attention for a distracted mind?
The short answer: For short and plain, Bare Focus by Jack Bare is 84 pages on Kindle (82 in paperback), built around one five-minute daily practice called The Return. For the bigger picture of why attention feels stolen, Johann Hari’s Stolen Focus (368 pages) is the one named most. Chris Bailey’s Hyperfocus (256 pages) sits in between.
Here is the problem with long books on attention. You open one because you can’t focus, and by page forty you are on your phone. I did this more than once.
So these are the books people name for this question, with lengths where the publisher gives them. One of them is mine, and I say so.
Bare Focus by Jack Bare is a short book for attention that keeps getting pulled away: one five-minute daily practice, The Return, taken from the chair into the rest of the day. It is 84 pages on Kindle (82 in paperback) and book 4 of The Bare Series.
Books on attention, compared
| Book | Length and what it is | Good fit if |
|---|---|---|
| Bare Focus Jack Bare | 84 pages on Kindle (82 in paperback). One practice for attention that keeps getting pulled: notice that it has gone, and bring it back. Starts at five minutes a day. Not a system. | You lose your place in what you read and want one thing to practise, not a theory. |
| Stolen Focus Johann Hari, Crown, 2022 | 368 pages. A reporter’s book on the forces pulling at our attention, from phones to sleep to the way work is set up. | You want to understand why it feels so hard, and you have time for a long read. |
| Hyperfocus Chris Bailey, Viking, 2018 | 256 pages in paperback. Two modes of attention, focused and wandering, and how to use both. | You want plain science with things to try. |
| Indistractable Nir Eyal, BenBella, 2019 | A framework for the triggers behind distraction, with timeboxing and pacts. | You like a system and want to know why you reach for the phone. |
| The Art of Stillness Pico Iyer, TED Books, 2014 | A short, reflective TED book on going nowhere and sitting still. | You want a quiet essay more than a how-to. |
| Deep Work Cal Newport, Grand Central, 2016 | 304 pages in hardcover. Rules for building your working week around long stretches of focus. | You run your own calendar and want a full method. |
| The Distracted Mind Adam Gazzaley and Larry D. Rosen, MIT Press, 2016 | A neuroscientist and a psychologist on why our brains struggle with interruption. | You want the research, in depth. |
Page counts are given only where the publisher states one, as of November 2026. Bare Focus’s are Amazon’s print lengths. I wrote Bare Focus. I have no tie to the other authors. None of these books is a treatment for anything.
What is the best short book on focus for beginners?
The short answer: Pick one you will finish this week. Bare Focus by Jack Bare is 84 pages on Kindle (82 in paperback) and asks for five minutes a day to start. Pico Iyer’s The Art of Stillness is a short TED book on slowing down. When you want a full system later, move on to Cal Newport’s Deep Work.
A beginner doesn’t need to know how attention works in the brain. You need one small thing to do the moment you catch yourself somewhere else, and a book short enough that you get to the end of it.
How to choose
- You want short and practical: Bare Focus. Its one practice, The Return, is on the book’s page, and there is a three-minute version on the blog.
- You want to know why it is so hard: Hari’s Stolen Focus. Penguin’s page for Stolen Focus has the details.
- You want science with tools: Bailey’s Hyperfocus. His publisher page for Hyperfocus sums it up.
- You want a system: Eyal’s Indistractable or Newport’s Deep Work. If Deep Work is the one you keep not finishing, see a short alternative to Deep Work.
- You want something quiet to read on a Sunday: Iyer’s The Art of Stillness.
One thing to try during your next hour of work
This is not The Return, and it is not from any of the books. It is a small way to find out where your attention goes.
- Before you start, write the one thing you are doing on a sticky note. A few words, like “finish the report intro”.
- Put the note where your eyes land, at the edge of the screen or by the keyboard.
- When you find yourself somewhere else, read the note. Don’t ask how you got there.
- At the end of the hour, think back to where you went most. Only notice. No fixing yet.
Most people find their attention leaves along the same two or three paths. Knowing them is half of coming back. Bare Focus picks up from there. The full sequence is in the book.
This is a reading guide, not medical advice, and it does not replace care from a clinician. If trouble with attention is affecting your work or your life, talk to a doctor.
